1983-1990 Need of a Hindu Temple in Toronto
From 1983 onwards, Many Hindus from Sri Lanka flowed into Canada as refugees and landed immigrants as the result of the ongoing civil war there. Most of them have settled in Greater Toronto Area. When they arrived in Canada, there were no Hindu temple of their tradition. Some years later, a Hindu temple was constructed in the suburban area. Hindus, specially elderly people, did not have the transportation facilities and they had a hard time to reach that temple. Within a couple of years, Hindu population in Toronto increased rapidly. Obviously, one temple was not enough to accommodate the religious needs of them. They realized the need of another temple within the city. But no one had the courage and dedication to construct a temple. The shortage of qualified Hindu priests at that time, is one of the main reasons for their reluctance.
1990 Rise of a thought from a Hindu Priest
Hindu priest, Sivasri. Thiagarajahkurukkal Kanaswami arrived in Canada. He is  well qualified in Hindu Priesthood studies and, he has adequate experience in temple matters. He has been the key man behind the construction of some temples in Northern Sri Lanka, too. He realized the urgent need of a Hindu temple in Toronto and planned to setup an organization to fulfill the spiritual and cultural needs of the Hindu community. He approached many educated Hindus in the community. They under-estimated the capability of Hindu Rev. Thiagarajahkurukkal and did not consider his request seriously. The Priest approached people in other communities, and got the relevant advices from them. He had been wandering everywhere with the 'only aim'  to get all the sources to establish a Hindu religious organization.
1991-1993 The beginning of the Temple
In the month of May 1991, on the Vaikasi Visakam day Hindu Rev. Thaigarajahkurukkal performed a Homam for the well being of people in his motherland. This was the first ritual performed by him in Canada for his community. He was able to perform this Homan with the support from  Tamil Murugan Temple Society and Hare Krishna temple in Toronto. With all his savings and loans from his relatives, Hindu Rev. Thaigarajahkurukkal leased a warehouse in Scarborough. On the Navarathithi day in 1991, a formal inauguration of the Sridurka Hindu Temple took place. The devotees gathered on that day greatly appreciated the way priest conducted the Puja. Day by day, devotees of the temple increased and every Hindu in the city talked about this temple and spiritual awakening. Within few months, all the vigrahas (idols)of the Deities were brought from India with blessings from High Priest Hindu Rev. Sambamoothy Sivachariar. On March 22, 1992 The consecration ritual (Maha Kumbabisekam ceremony) was performed. All the deities were installed. Within two years, due to the miracles happened in the temple, congregation of the temple was tremendously increased. The Board of the trustees decided to move this temple to a permanent place. They were able to find a suitable building with relevant permits. It was located in 30 Carnforth Road in the center of the city. The property was purchased and all the Vigrahas (idols) were moved from the old temple on August 19, 1994.
1994-2000 Temple moved to the Permanent place
All the deities were again consecrated in a temporary place in the new building. Tentative consecration ceremony (Balalaya Kumbabisekam) was performed on August 20, 1994. The founder and the president of the temple visited many temples in South India and consulted many high priests regarding the construction of the new temple. He, himself, designed the 'Temple Structure Plan' and that plan was finally approved by the Board of directors . On August 19, 1996, Ground Digging Ceremony for the new temple took place. Thousands of devotees participated and installed 1008 holy conch shells (Sangusthaabanam)  inside the foundation. Inner temples were constructed by the Silpis from South India in accordance with the Agamic and silpa traditions. By grace of the god the "Thiruppani" works have come to a completion according to the aspirations of the temple president, Sivasri. Thigarajahkurukkal Kanaswami. His patience, endurance and dedication are the main factors for the completion of the first phase of the Temple project. Over all, god's grace  has been guiding through out the project.
2001 SRIDURKA HINDU TEMPLE EMERGED WITH 33 HOMA CONSECRATION CEREMONY
This temple has the sacredness and proud of having the 33 Homa Uththma Mahakumbabisekam (Best preferred consecration ritual). This kind of Maha kumbabisekam was performed only in few temples in India and Sri Lanka. This is the first temple which has performed this great ritual in a western country. Hindu high priests from many countries all around the world participated in this ceremony. More than forty thousand devotees viewed the Kumbabisekam. It was on July 2, 2001. Sridurka Hindu Temple has emerged in the city of Toronto in Canada.
